ISO 45001:2018 sets forth requirements for an occupational health and safety management system and provides guidelines for its implementation. It reflects the latest thinking on occupational health and safety management, incorporating best practices. 

The occupational health and safety management system is a part of the overall management system of the workplace. It encompasses all elements that contribute to establishing the company’s policy and objectives in the field of occupational health and safety, as well as achieving those objectives. An effective occupational health and safety management system enables, among other things: 

  • reduction in the number of workplace accidents and occupational diseases, along with associated losses; 
  • decrease in employee sick leave; 
  • increase in productivity and improvement in the quality of work. 

By meeting the requirements of ISO 45001:2018, the occupational health and safety management system is implemented. This can be done independently or with the assistance of external specialists. The process of implementing the occupational health and safety management system follows this outline: 

  1. Organization review – assessing the degree of compliance of the organization’s functioning with the requirements of ISO 45001:2018 and identifying deficiencies to be addressed in subsequent stages. 
  2. Documentation of the system – developing procedures, instructions, and forms required by the standard, which will be useful during the certification of the occupational health and safety (OHS) system. 
  3. Employee training – acquainting the staff with the system to ensure that each person understands their role in the management system structure and can operate within it. 
  4. Internal audit – an independent auditor checks if the system in the organization meets the standard’s requirements. 
  5. Corrective actions and management review – addressing any errors identified during the audit and conducting an analysis of the system’s performance.
