ISO 14001 is an international standard for environmental management. This standard was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and concerns environmental management systems in organizations.

ISO 14001 specifies requirements for identifying, assessing, and managing an organization’s impacts on the environment. The standard aims to help organizations prevent negative effects of their activities on the environment and promote sustainable development. Implementing a management system in accordance with ISO 14001 allows organizations to identify and assess the environmental aspects of their activities, such as emissions, natural resource consumption, waste management, and impact on biodiversity. Based on this, organizations develop goals, action programs, and procedures aimed at minimizing these impacts and continuously improving their environmental performance. The ISO 14001 certificate is voluntary, and an organization can obtain it after undergoing an audit by an independent certifying organization. The audit assesses the organization’s environmental management system for compliance with ISO 14001 requirements. If the organization meets these requirements, it receives a certificate confirming that its management system is in compliance with ISO 14001.

The ISO 14001 certificate is available to organizations of all types, regardless of their size, sector of activity, or geographical location. Both private companies and public institutions can apply for the certificate.

Certification can be carried out by any certifying organization accredited by the Polish Centre for Accreditation (PCA). Information about the nearest accredited body can be found on the website www.pca.gov.pl in the “Accredited Entities” section, or you can contact us for assistance.

To meet the requirements of the ISO 14001 environmental management standard, an organization should implement and maintain a management system that includes the following elements:

Environmental Policy – containing commitments and objectives related to environmental protection by the organization. It should be documented, communicated within the organization, and made available to interested parties.
Planning – conducting an assessment of the organization’s impact on the environment and identifying significant aspects. Developing objectives and action plans to minimize these impacts, considering legal requirements and regulations related to environmental protection. The organization should also identify potential emergency situations, including those that may impact the environment.
Implementation and Operations – implementing procedures and processes to achieve environmental objectives, maintaining appropriate documentation and records related to environmental activities, and providing training for personnel.
Checking and Corrective Actions – regularly monitoring and measuring environmental performance, conducting internal audits to verify compliance with ISO 14001 requirements, and identifying areas for improvement.
Management Review – conducting regular reviews of the environmental management system, assessing its compliance with requirements, effectiveness, and implementing changes in areas for improvement.

The foundational approach underlying the environmental management system is based on the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) concept.

The PDCA cycle, also known as the continuous improvement cycle, can be described as follows:

PLAN – Define the goals of the system and its processes, determine resources, and conduct risk and opportunity analyses. Evaluate the current state of the organization and existing processes.
DO – Implement planned changes, create documentation, and train employees.
CHECK – Verify the results of implemented actions, compare them with the set goals.
ACT -Take corrective actions, identify areas that need improvement, analyze them, and then implement actions that will prevent similar issues from occurring in the future.

The ISO 14001 certificate is valid for a specified period, typically three years. During this time, the organization undergoes regular surveillance audits to maintain certification. After three years, the certificate needs to be renewed through a recertification audit.

Size and type of the organization, its structure, and scope of activities.
Preparation for certification: Before entering the certification process, the organization may need time and resources to implement and adapt its environmental management system to the requirements of ISO 14001.
