Under PN-EN 50172, emergency lighting systems require daily functional checks (indicator status), monthly duration tests (at least 1/4 of rated autonomy), and a full annual test of the complete rated duration (1 or 3 hours). Polish fire safety law (the Fire Protection Act of 24 August 1991) additionally requires the building owner, manager, or occupier to maintain all fire safety installations in working order at all times.

PSP (Państwowa Straż Pożarna — State Fire Service) inspectors verify that all fire safety installations are present, operational, and properly maintained. For emergency lighting this means: luminaires function when mains power is cut, backup duration meets rated specs, signage is correct and visible, and a recent inspection log or report exists. Absence of documentation is treated the same as non-compliance.

Responsibility falls on the building owner, manager, or occupier — whoever has actual control of the premises. For leased commercial space, the lease agreement typically delegates day-to-day maintenance to the tenant, but the underlying obligation to maintain a safe building usually remains with the landlord or property manager.
